Would Marvin Hagler get a little more criticism if he fought today?
i seem to be one of the few boxing fans, outside of a writer or two from KO magazine back in the 80's, who thinks hagler's title defenses were somewhat dubious. with today's more savvy fans, the internet, etc, would marvin have gotten away with calling himself an all time great champion by barely getting past a blown up lightweight like roberto duran? blowing out a skinny thomas hearns? a natural junior middleweight in john mugabi? does anyone remember wilfred benitez coming within a hair of getting his shot at hagler? anyone recall marvin telling michael spinks to "go to hell" when spinks told him to stop picking on little guys and move up to LH? would two defenses against fully obelmejias, hamsho, and dudes named wilford scypion and caveman lee be okay today? today, would some ask why the leonard fight was close in the first place? would struggling against someone named juan roldan be acceptable today? i know there is something admirable in staying at one weight class and dominating, but remember, his biggest money fights were against guys who were not natural middleweights.
