Air signs are the thinkers but why then?

Is Mercury exalted in Virgo? I agree air signs are quick and smart ect. But........... So are Virgos. Why are Virgos not considered thinkers? They are supposedly down to earth and patient ect. Let me tell you I can mentally keep up with any air sign and then some. I just feel like Virgo should be more appreciated for it's mental qualities. Air signs aren't the only quick signs who think all the time.
