Do i need to drop the engine to replace timing belt?

I have a 1995 mercury mystique,2.5 6cyl.I may need the timing belt changed.Do you have to drop the engine for this or the tranny?I am concerned that i do,and it may be costly.I am not a mechanic and want to know before i take it to one.
