Why do they put mercury in High Fructose Cory Syrup?

The mercury is a contaminant that is potentially introduced in the chemical processing of HFCS. It isn't intentionally added, but was certainly tested to be present in detectable amounts in a study from 2009. What is even more frightening is the Hg introduced by amalgam fillings. I couldn't find any follow-up studies since the 2009 article, but I imagine things haven't improved much. Our food is a chemical product, not a nutritive food source.
