What's the attraction of - ugh! - David Bowie?

He's whining away on the radio about Mars at the moment, missing about every third note. The lyrics make no sense I can see but on he goes and on and on, whine, whine and those horrible English teeth and what a get-up on YouTube.com. Again, ugh! ... How did this guy with an effeminate voice and very dubious pitch get so big, I wonder? What am I missing?
