My Car only starts when I crank the ignition and give it gas. ?

I have a 95 mercury mystique and the only way to start it is to turn the key and give it gas. If you just turn the key then it sounds like it wants to start but won't. This started after a blown head gasket was replaced and all the radiator hoses were replaced as well. Any ideas would help thanks
